We get to see great live music year round at The Rebel Lounge, and we thought it would be fun to try to pick out some of our favorite shows that we saw in 2016. We’re lucky to get to work with so many great local and national musicians on a daily basis at our venue! So without further adieu, here are our Top Ten Shows We Saw In 2016!

Stephen Chilton (aka Psyko Steve)

In Chronological Order:

January 16 – Phoenix Rock Lottery at Crescent Ballroom  This is probably my favorite annual show I produce. It is the best coming to gather of the local music scene all year. Always a show not to be missed.

January 19 – Rebirth Brass Band at Maple Leaf, New Orleans  Getting to see Rebirth Brass Band on their own turf was great. No better way to spend a trip to NOLA than watching one of the best Brass Bands do their thing.

March 12 – VIVA PHX Rocket From The Crypt! Finally got to see them. So great. This VIVA I was able to spend less time running around working and more time watching sets. What a great day for Phoenix every year.

March 18 – Beach Slang at The Sidewinder, Austin – SXSW Every year it feels there is a band I watch several times at SXSW just because I can. This year that band was Beach Slang. The Sidewinder set was them at their best (and the crowd at its drunkest!).

April 24 – Front Bottoms at Rialto Theatre, Tucson Front Bottoms had a huge year. I missed them at Coachella but did get to see them at Lollapalooza (with the great Kevin Devine filling in on bass). The Rialto Theatre show was great to see after watching them for so many years.

June 1 – At The Drive-In at Palladium, LA I got to see the original At The Drive-In once back in ’99. One of the sets that changed how I saw music. I had no idea what I was seeing that first time and they blew me away. This time I knew what I was getting and they delivered.

June 23 – Fishbone at The Rebel Lounge We got to host Fishbone twice at Rebel this year. The second time featured only the second show with Fish, the original drummer, in 18 years. But the first show got a crazier. Fishbone got their start touring with gigs at the old Mason Jar so getting them back was a special night for us at Rebel.

July 12 – Pinegrove at The Rebel Lounge We have hosted Pingrove a few times in the last year. They are one of the best new bands I saw this year. Every time I got to see them they just got better and better.

September 18 – Motion City Sound Track at The Metro, Chicago – Riot Fest After Show  This was the last ever Motion City Sound show. They were a band I booked very early on in both my career and theirs and it was great to be able to see them on the last night.

November 23 – Lydia at Mesa Arts Center Lydia and I have been talking about doing a show at Mesa Art Center for years and we finally did it. They even brought a string section!

March 13 – Beck, Griz & Porter Robinson at McDowell Mountain Music Festival My friends didn’t like Porter, but I’m a sucker for internet sounds, I guess. Sue me!
April 27 – RuPaul’s Drag Race at Celebrity Theatre HILARIOUS. Also, I appreciate anyone who can dance in 5” heels.
August 2 – Weezer & Panic! at the Disco at Ak Chin Pavilion Brandon (of Panic) sang Bohemian Rhapsody live and freaking nailed it. Rivers made dad jokes.
August 23 – Culture Cult at Celebrity Theatre Boy George thought the spinning stage at Celebrity was hilarious & dressed to impress.
September 21 – Highly Suspect at Crescent Ballroom Duh. This show changed my life in many ways, ha.
March 21 – Lawrence at The Rebel Lounge Soul-funk brother and sister band. Seriously incredible musicians. Can’t believe they’re not more popular to be honest.
September 15 – The Monkees at Mesa Arts Center Hey hey! It’s the FREAKING MONKEES!
January 9 – Captain Squeegee, Bear Ghost & Harrison Fjord (..and Fairy Bones) at The Rebel Lounge Every band was up on stage at the end of the night singing an impromptu song together. Unforgettable.
