Top Ten Shows We Saw In 2017

It’s that time of year again…to look back on all the awesome concerts we got to see in 2017! Not only do we see great shows year-round on our own stage, but our staff also tries to see as many awesome shows around town (and the country) as we can. Here are our Top Ten Shows We Saw In 2017!

Stephen Chilton (aka Psyko Steve)
(in chronological order)

January 21 – The Maine at 8123 Fest – Crescent Ballroom
Some great home town boys who do not get nearly the credit they deserve. They are some of the most stand up dudes you will ever meet. So proud of what they achieved with their inaugural “8123” Fest.

January 28 – Phoenix Rock Lottery – Crescent Ballroom
This is always one of my favorite shows every year (I could have just copied my blurb from last year’s list). Just so much great energy in the room.

March 11 – American Football – Viva Phx
American Football was a band that had already broken up by the time I discovered them. But they had such a huge influence on everything I grew up listening too. It was great to be able to bring them to PHX.

April 18 – Two Door Cinema Club – Orpheum Theatre (Vancouver, BC)
Honestly, I missed the start of the show, but what I saw was amazing. Most incredible was the venue. The Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver is spectacular…and as a Battle Star Galactica fan, it was a must see.

May 2 – New Found Glory – The Nile Theater
I saw NFG at The Nile Theater so many times in the late ’90s/early 2000s. It was a real honor to be able to bring them back for their 20 Year Anniversary Tour. And seeing all of Sticks & Stones and Catalyst didn’t hurt either.

June 9 – The Anniversary at The Rebel Lounge
The Anniversary was the first show I ever went to at Modified Arts. They were a band I found when they opened for The Get Up Kids a few months before (in ’98?). It was great to finally get to do a show for them; it had been years since I had seen them.

August 23 – Cold War Kids at The Van Buren
Opening nights are always the best….and opening night at the new Van Buren downtown was no exception.

September 9 – Brand New – High & Low Fest (San Bernadino, CA)
Brand New debuted a number of songs off their latest record this night, and their production was next level. Props to the team behind High & Low Fest for putting on such a rad first year event.

September 17 – Jawbreaker – Riot Fest (Chicago, IL)
I saw Jawbreaker. It was sweet. If you haven’t seen my photos from it, you don’t know I had a great view. #bragging

September 17 – Hot Water Music – Cobra Lounge (Chicago, IL – Riot Fest Afterparty)
I LOVE Hot Water Music and they don’t tour enough. Great way to end Riot Fest.

November 12 – The Front Bottoms – The Van Buren
Okay it’s hard to choose just 10. I have been working with The Front Bottoms for years now. So excited to see them having the success that they are right now. So deserved.

Jeff Taylor (Marketing / Assistant Talent Buyer)
(in chronological order)

March 11 – Viva Phx – Downtown Phoenix
Got to see Fucked Up, Playboy Manbaby, Health, LVL Up & Palm on the stage I was working at, plus got to escape for a few to watch some of American Football’s set!

March 21 – OMNI – The Lunchbox
I was lucky enough to open for OMNI, one of my favorite bands of the last few years – and it was a total treat to see them in such an intimate setting.

April 10 – David Bazan – a house in Mesa
After seeing him at various venues over the years, it was super cool to see a legend playing for a chatting with a small crowd in a living room. Definitely one of the most unique “shows” I saw this year.

April 26 – Pile with Gnarwhal & Twin Ponies – The Rebel Lounge
Seeing Pile live again was incredible, especially with such a killer lineup!

May 13 – FORM with Future Islands, Father John Misty, Vieux Farka Toure & The Hotelier – Arcosanti
I got to go to one day of FORM this year and it was a pretty awesome experience – saw a good variety of artists at an absolutely beautiful destination I have always wanted to visit!

June 6 – Chon with Tera Melos & Covet – Neumos (Seattle, WA)
Always love checking out venues in other cities… plus Tera Melos wasn’t on the Chon Phoenix date this summer so it was awesome to see them together in Seattle!

October 15 – Desert Daze Day 3 with Goggs, Khruangbin, Petyr & Drugdealer – Institute Of Mentalphysics (Joshua Tree, CA)
Desert Daze was the first festival I had camped at in a few years… and had a blast – we saw some great bands each day, but specifically Goggs & Khruangbin were two huge highlights for me from the weekend.

October 17 – Protomartyr & Koo Koo Kanga Roo – The Rebel Lounge
Okay these were two completely different shows that just happened to fall on the same day at Rebel… but both these groups put on an incredible show, and it was the best thing ever to watch our room change over from 100+ children with their parents for Koo Koo Kanga Roo to a totally different crowd for the late night Protomartyr show. Plus it was super fun watching Koo Koo with the guys from Protomartyr.

November 9 – Hovvdy with Jurassic Shark & Young Jesus – Bootleg Theater (Los Angeles, CA)
On an off day on a recent tour we got to check out Hovvdy with our friends Young Jesus at a great space in LA! Killer bill.

November 15 – Tera Melos & Speedy Ortiz – The Rebel Lounge
We were also fortunate enough to open for some total heroes of mine in Tera Melos! It was really cool getting to see them on our stage and watching Speedy Ortiz open up for them.
